Product Spotlight: Resound Sensia

I recently had the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the Resound US Headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was so fascinating! It was also a special opportunity to hear from industry leaders about the latest in hearing aid technology. Plus, I was able to wear the newest product from Resound: the Sensia.
My Experience with the ReSound Sensia
Comfort: The device itself is the smallest on the market, and after five minutes of wearing it, I didn’t even notice it was there. Because the device is so small and lightweight, I didn’t feel it on the back of my ear.
The domes were a great fit too. Resound has redesigned their domes to be more durable, more tapered for a comfortable fit, and more wax-resistant, with the addition of a loop on the end.
Clarity: I experienced smooth, natural sound all day. I can relate to my patients, who sometimes say chewing is loud… my chips at lunch sounded pretty noisy!
Luckily, I learned some tips and tricks for how to make some of those sounds more comfortable, thanks to the flexibility of Resound programming software.
Connectivity: During my time at a lecture hall and during the plant tour, I was able to tap into Auracast, a wireless broadcast that allows a single source to stream to an unlimited number of nearby receivers at the same time.
With Auracast, you don’t need to pair a device to the sound source, as you do with classic Bluetooth. You can tune in just by scanning for a stream and joining it, much like connecting to public Wi-Fi. I listened to the tour guide and several presenters through my hearing aids and it was a big help, especially during the noisy factory tour when the guide was walking in front of me.
All hearing aid releases now have access to this up-and-coming technology, and you will start to see it installed in many public places, such as airports and restaurants. Any wireless device can utilize Auracast, even Apple AirPods!
What Makes the Resound Sensia Unique
Resound most accurately classifies the sound environment to ensure that appropriate features and noise reduction are applied. They also take the approach of using two combined techniques to reduce noise and enhance speech.
1) A Deep Neural Network (DNN) chip, which is the “brain” of the hearing aid and is loaded with thousands of sound samples to help it learn all types of speech and noise.
2) A four-microphone beamformer, which is just a fancy way of saying that when noise is present, it hears the speech in front of you louder than what’s behind you. This assumes that when there is a high level of noise, you want to hear the person you are facing.
Although there are major improvements, there are also naturally some limitations. The hearing aid is not smart enough to actually know just what you want to listen to. If someone at a restaurant sitting a few tables from you has a loud voice, you may hear them more than someone talking quietly at your own table.
